The Southern Nevada Forensic Facility is a 327,000 square foot psychiatric campus designed to serve as a state-of-the-art center for healing, occupant safety, and rehabilitation. The facility houses three inpatient psychiatric units with a total of 298 beds, alongside clincal, social, administrative, and support spaces. The master plan also allows for an additional future fourth patient wing. The design, grounded in collaboration from across the medical community and design teams, strives to promote healing without feeling institutional. Each zone of the building is arranged to reflect a balance between clinical efficiency and a sense of calm. Intuitive circulation, branching wings, materials, and light were all layered upon each other to encourage identity, stress reduction, and comfort. Nature-inspired finishes and local visual expressions offer a unique experience and provide wayfinding. Warm, tactile finishes and natural light bring softness in order to humanize the environment. Outward views also aim to orient and provide openness within a secure setting. The architecture takes its cues from the Mojave Desert, flowing across the site in an organic pattern. The footprint not only responds to the site, but breaks down the scale to feel less imposing. Muted desert hues, layers of shadow, and articulated massing reflect the landscape and gives it more of a campus feel. Through its integration of form, function, material, and meaning, SNFF stands as a vision for how modern mental health care environments can be a place of safety, purpose, and enduring are for generations to come
