City of Las Vegas Veterans Memorial at Thunderbird Park

City of Las Vegas Veterans Memorial at Thunderbird Park

The City of Las Vegas’ Veteran’s Memorial at Thunderbird park is located on an approximately 3.80 acres northwest portion of the existing Thunderbird Sports Complex. The project includes installation of the relocated Memorial walls, plaques, and statues from the Nevada State Public Works Department’s storage as well as the introduction of a new plaza, pavilion, and expansion of the existing surface parking lot. Whilst the design of the proposed Memorial largely recreates the granite finishes and pavement pattern from the current Veteran’s Memorial, there are new proposed components such as contemporary lighted benches for contemplation areas as well as a higher concentration of desert landscape, contemporary fixtures, and the technologies to modernize the overall experience. The Plaza has been designed to offer a seamless flow between the memorial, featuring a flexible open-plan configuration. Strategically placed landscape enclaves have been provided to frame the plaza with a sense of progression, spatial layers, and perceived privacy. To create flexible space, the Pavilion has been designed with a performance stage which can be viewed from all around, allowing audience spaces from both removable furnishings seating area underneath the Pavilion canopy and from the amphitheater’s terracing landscape on the opposite end. Dynamic articulation of the tiered seating with integral in-ground and raised planters aims to morph and become one with the surrounding landscape. Security and connectivity are paramount considerations. Elements on the site have been carefully planned with safety, adjacencies, programs, and growth in mind. Various types of bollards with uniform aesthetics are strategically utilized throughout ranging from regular, lighted, with integral power receptacles, and removable types. The Plaza — designed as a venue to serve leisure and contemplation endeavors — can also be transformed into a hub to accommodate a wide range of gatherings from civic scale to lively community events. The proposed Veteran’s Memorial will provide a dignified place of solemn remembrance to honor our American heroes and will simultaneously serve Nevadans and the Las Vegas community as a serene natural park with curated public space and arts in the spirit of national pride and patriotism.
